Helka Kettunen

My artistic journey began in childhood, shaping beads and animals from clay I collected near a local brick factory. This early connection to materials led me to study jewellery making. However, art alone did not provide me with a sufficient income, so I continued my studies. I made a career in the field of education in a municipality and a university. Art has always been my passion, so during those years I made jewelry and ceramics on commission.

Now working as a freelance artist, I create jewelry and ceramics, and produce videos. I draw inspiration for my jewelry and ceramics from everything I see, experience, and read. In my jewelry, I combine natural and recycled materials – clay, leather, glass, plastic, copper, and silver – to design pieces that reflect my environmental values.

Though self-taught in ceramics, my background in design and art education has provided a solid foundation. I constantly expand my skills through books, museums, and workshops. All my ceramics are hand-built and unique. I enjoy experimenting, particularly with raku firing – an intense and unpredictable process that produces one-of-a-kind textures and colors.

I am a member of the The Finnish Goldsmiths’ Association.
